February 26, 1931 – April 18, 2024
James Cavin “Jim” Morrison, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of the community, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in Winnipeg, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born in Dundee, Scotland, on February 26, 1931. He immigrated to Canada in pursuit of a better life, where he thrived and left an indelible mark on those around him. A man of integrity, he was known for his unwavering kindness and generosity, touching the lives of many through his dedication to family, community, and his passions.
As a devoted husband to Grace Morrison, he shared countless cherished moments and created a home filled with love and warmth. A proud Scot, Jim retained a deep connection to his roots, often regaling loved ones with stories of his upbringing, instilling in them a profound appreciation for their ancestry.
Jim’s adventurous spirit was ignited at the age of 18 during his formative years in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1949, training at Padgate, England. Upon returning to Dundee, Jim met Grace at a dancehall, and it was love at first sight. Together they made the bold decision to start a new life in Canada, marrying in Port Arthur, Ontario on June 6, 1955, beginning a union that lasted almost 69 years.
In 1958, Jim and Grace settled in Winnipeg, raising their five children. Jim began his career at Petty’s Meat Market, and in 1968 he and his business partner took over the store on Portage Avenue, renaming it Pennywise Meats. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to quality made Pennywise Meats a cherished establishment in the community.
Passionate about cycling, Jim became involved in the sport professionally, serving as President of the Winnipeg Cycling Club in 1966 and 1967. He played a pivotal role in cycling events including the Pan Am Games in 1967 and 1999, and served as an official at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, with the Canadian Cycling Team.
Jim’s dedication to cycling spanned his entire life. In 2012, the Manitoba Cycling Association awarded Jim the Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious recognition honored him for his decades of dedication to cycling, which paved the way for numerous professional cyclists to achieve success on national and international stages thanks to his unwavering support.
In his leisure time, Jim found happiness being with his family, cycling and the outdoors, embracing every moment with positivity, enthusiasm and gratitude, whether cycling 60 kilometers in Spain or sharing a laugh with his family and friends.
Jim will be dearly missed by his loving wife Grace, their four children, Karen (Giovanni), James (Michele), Paul (Lori), and Brent (Sandra), and his four grandchildren, Grace, Ava, Nathan, and Zachery —all of whom had the honor of calling him a friend. Jim is preceded in death by his daughter Shelby (Edward) and his sisters Elizabeth, Kathleen and Maria.
Though he may no longer walk among us, Jim’s beautiful smile and spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear and the values he imparted upon us.
