September 23, 1966 – October 1, 2023
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rick, early Sunday morning on October 1, 2023 after his brave battle with cancer.
Rick’s absence will be felt by many as he has impacted many people in his life’s journey. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 28 years, Michelle; his beloved children, Keira and Tyler; his mother, Irene Medina; older brother Raymund, and younger sisters, Nina (Bob) and Sarah (Rico); in-laws Willie and Virgie, Berna, Chris (Jocelyn), and his nieces and nephew (Isla, Zoe, Araya and Javan). Rick was predeceased by his father, Ric. Rick will also be dearly missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
Rick was born in the Philippines where he spent his childhood years. In his early teens in 1980, Rick moved to Winnipeg with his parents and three siblings. It was no surprise that Rick eventually became a Professional Engineer as he enjoyed design and construction as a child building legos with his siblings and later designing and creating an impressive set of sound speakers from scratch. He pursued further education and received his MBA. Rick also had creative talent, participating many years in cultural Filipino dancing as well as choreographing classical cotillion dances for debutante parties. Rick was an audiophile, known for his sound system components, elaborate set up at home, and sharing the sound experience with his friends and family. Rick was a meticulous, efficient, and practical person that perfectly aligned with the advancement of his career in lean/six sigma in operational excellence.
While studying at the University of Manitoba, Rick met the love of his life, Michelle. They dated many years and married in 1995. Rick and Michelle began their life adventure together in Winnipeg. Rick accepted new challenges in his career that brought he and Michelle to reside in Doncaster, United Kingdom; Milton, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta; then to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rick and Michelle grew their family with the birth of Keira and Tyler in the UK.
Rick was able to make long lasting memories through his travels with his family enjoying countless trips and cruises. He was a true “foodie” and had a love for good food, wine and single malt scotch. Rick and Michelle enjoyed hosting and welcomed many to their home; holiday dinners, summer barbecues, scotch tastings, and food and wine pairing evenings with friends and family.
Rick will be deeply missed; his sense of humour, his twinkling smiling eyes that would give away his attempt at making jokes and pranks, his generous heart, and his strength, guidance, and love for Michelle, Keira, and Tyler, family and friends.
We are grateful to the medical staff at the Health Science Centre Cancer Care; St. Boniface Hospital Internal and Palliative Care, Concordia Hospital; Dr. Shantanu Banerji, Dr. Anthony Battad, Dr. Eren Beshara, Dr. David Christansen and Dr. Alon Pathak.
