Our Patron Saint
“Be living witnesses of the greatness and beauty of Christianity.” – St. Gianna
On September 13, 2005, we received the beautiful and blessed name for our new parish community, St. Gianna Beretta Molla Roman Catholic Church. St. Gianna Beretta Molla is a lay Saint which envelops the meaning of our community.
Gianna was a modern-day, working mother, who lived an ordinary middle-class life with simplicity, respecting life. Working as a physician, her vocation was her husband and children. She lived her stewardship of faith with Jesus at the center of all aspects of her life. Gianna enjoyed skiing, tennis, mountaineering, the symphony, theatre, opera, painting and playing the piano.
Gianna Beretta was born in Magenta (Milan), Italy, on October 3, 1922, the tenth of 13 children. As a young woman, she was involved in Catholic Action and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
In 1955, Gianna married Pietro, and together they would have four children. In September 1961, in the second month of her fourth pregnancy, she was diagnosed with a large fibroma – a benign tumor in the uterus. Her doctors suggested abortion to save her life. They then discussed surgery as an option. Gianna told the doctors if they had to choose between saving her life and the life of her baby, they were to save the baby.
On the morning of April 21, 1962, Holy Saturday, Gianna gave birth to her fourth child, Gianna Emanuela via Caesarean section. One week later, on the morning of Saturday, April 28, Gianna died in her home in Magenta. She was 39. Her last action in life was the heroic and selfless decision to choose the gift of life for her daughter, Gianna Emanuela.
On April 24, 1994, Gianna was beatified by Pope John Paul II, and on May 16, 2004, His Holiness canonized Gianna Beretta Molla, along with five others, in St. Peter’s Square.

St. Gianna Beretta Molla – Prayer
O God our Father, we praise you and bless you because in St. Gianna Beretta Molla,
you have given to us a woman who witnessed to the Gospel,
as a young person, a wife, a mother and a doctor.
We thank you because through the gift of her life, we learn to accept and honour every human being.
You, Lord Jesus were for her privileged reference. She was able to know You in the beauty of nature.
As she questioned her choice of life, she always sought You and how to serve you best.
Through her married love she became a sign of Your love for the Church and for humanity.
Like You, the Good Samaritan, she stopped at the side of every sick person, small and weak.
Following Your example, she gave herself entirely out of love, generating new life.
Holy Spirit, source of every perfection, grant also to us wisdom, intelligence and courage
so that through the example of St. Gianna’s personal, family and professional life,
and through her intercession, we, too, are able to place ourselves
at the service of every person and grow in love and holiness.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
